    Airsoft-What it truly is.

Post by AFU on Sun Nov 16, 2008 8:01 am

What truly is airsoft, a sport, a hobby, and pure entertainment? of course, but what truly comprises airsoft? Airsoft is a sport where players use realistic guns to fire plastic BBs in tactical situations. “A lot like paintball,” one could say, although I fear those people would be drastically wrong. Saying airsoft is like paintball is like saying watching TV is the same as going to the movies. And so that is the question, what is airsoft? Airsoft is no more and no less than its players.

Airsoft is a modern combat sport or recreational hobby in which participants eliminate their opponents by hitting each other with spherical, non-metallic pellets launched from compressed-air gun (or soft air gun). Airsoft has its roots in late-1950s East Asia, specifically Japan where firearms were difficult or impossible to obtain due to local laws; these countries sought a legal alternative for enjoying their passion. Airsoft is most popular in several Asian regions, such as Japan, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, South Korea, and to a certain extent the Philippines, and Indonesia. The vast majority of airsoft guns, accessories, and after-market upgrade parts are also manufactured in these countries.

Airsoft is the sniper, who stalks others in stealth like the lion stalks its prey. Whose gun shoots at a higher feet per second, a greater distance, and of unmatched accuracy. A sniper adapts to his environment. Ghillie suits, head to toe suits designed to hide a person withint the surrounding terrain, for forest, jungle, desert, and snow. He knows the terrain, how to utilize it. He is unseen until it is too late. Always moving, but slowly, sure that no one will find him, death that stalks unseen. For the airsoft player, this might be the greatest challenge. To be an effective airsoft sniper, you must know where you are playing. A desert requires different camouflage than a forest; even the gun requires different camouflage. You can move faster in a desert, with no leaves and twigs to break as you walk. One shot, one kill.

Airsoft is the support gunner, who lays down massive overwhelming firepower, unmatched by anyone else. The support gunner is the man whose rate of fire can shoot more BBs than most guns can even hold. His clips are interchangeable with his fellow teammates, and they theirs. He may not be the first player on the field, but all tremble upon his arrival, and all who do wish they hadn’t come across him. A good support gunner should carries more than his gun, such as mines, claymores, and grenades. He is truly the master of explosions.

Airsoft is the main gunner, a man who can lay a steady steam of fire, and yet who is a master of accuracy. He doesn’t shoot nearly as recklessly as his support gunner. He is foremost on the battlefield, and he is last to leave. In airsoft, he is what today we would consider a marine. The world’s greatest weapon is a marine and his rifle. But as a marine must pride himself on his accuracy, so must the airsoft gunner. If anything ,the main gunner must carry the most in equipment. He must carry all his magazines, both rifle and pistol. He must carry any shells, clips, and extra batteries. He must carry these while remaining fast. He must be able to think clearly and under pressure. He must be able to lead, and to follow. A good leader can charge from the front, but knows that you can only lead from the back.

Airsoft is not just its players; it is the terrain like the desert, with its blowing sands and its glaring sun and its unbearable heat. It is the forest with the cover of trees, the rustle of leaves, and the cracking of twigs. It is the snow, with its trail of footprints, its ability to prevent movement. Airsoft is the dedication of its players to simulate so closely the tactical world. It is the realism that airsoft players strive to maintain. Airsoft is the seriousness, in which each gun replica is treated like its real counterpart. Airsoft is its players; may we never forget that, above all else.
